Project tasks

task 1:

characterization of maritime traffic and safe routes for ships

Task 1 develops statistical models to characterize the normal behaviour of the maritime traffic and operational profiles for different ship types navigating in local waterways and under particular weather conditions, which will reduce the uncertainty of the current marine operations.

task 2:

Methods for anomaly and collision detection

Task 2 is devoted to the development of unsupervised tools for maritime anomaly and ship-to-ship collision detection. These tools will provide alerts on abnormal traffic behaviour of individual ships and information on the likelihood of collisions in various geographical locations and on the collision parameters such as the ship types and sizes, collision angles, collision speed and the time of the day of a potential collision, which will be used later for consequence assessment and to define the dynamic risk index in task 3.

task 3:

Development of a dynamic risk index of individual ships

Task 3 formulates a dynamic risk index for individual ships and for the marine traffic off the continental coast of Portugal and ports entrances that will combine relevant external and internal risk influencing .

task 4:

Detailed analysis of accidental scenarios

Task 4 analyse in detail particular collision scenarios identified and characterized in Task 2. The detailed analysis includes the development of tools for strength and load assessment of the damaged ships, in particular methods to evaluate the residual strength of the ship hull girder with asymmetrical damages and time-domain models capable of predicting the behaviour and the loads on a damaged ship subjected to progressive flooding. These tools will be used to assess the probability of structural failure and loss of stability of the damaged ships under progressive flooding and to evaluate the consequences of the accidents.

task 5:

Integrated system for traffic monitoring and maritime risk assessment

Task 5 develops an integrated system for traffic monitoring and maritime risk assessment. The system will be designed to provide information on the safe routes for the maritime traffic off the continental coast of Portugal, including in ports entrances, alerts on abnormal traffic behaviour and information on the dynamic risk index of the ships. The developed system will be tested with real-time AIS/radar fused data from the Portuguese coastal VTS control centre (CCTMC) of the DGRM.
